Checklist for playing by the rules

  1. Does the dissertation course have any prerequisite courses, e.g. research methods?  
  1. Have you met any of these prerequisites?
 
  1. Is dissertation an option or a necessary core unit on your degree route?
 
  1. What key dates are there for dissertation?
 
  1. If you have a dissertation proposal, when is it due in?
 
  1. When is the completed dissertation due in?
 
  1. How long should the dissertation be?
 
  1. Is there a maximum length?
 
  1. Is there a minimum length?
 
  1. Do you know what gets counted into dissertation length?
 
  1. Is numerical data counted as words (word counters usually include numbers)?
 
  1. Are appendices included in a word count?
 
  1. Bibliography?
 
  1. Tables?
 
  1. Contents pages?
 
  1. What style guidance notes exist?
 
  1. Must you always write in the third person [1] , or can you use first person?
 
  1. Are you required to pose and test hypotheses?
 
  1. Is original empirical investigation required?
 
  1. Are you allowed (or required) to work only with secondary data [2] ?
 
  1. Are the contents of the dissertation prescribed in a specimen contents page?
 
  1. Must you have a literature review chapter?
 
  1. Must you have a methodology/methods chapter?
 
  1. Are you required to separate data from analysis?
 
  1. Do you know how marks are awarded for dissertation?
 
  1. Do you know if  marks are given for the research process, or only for the written report?
 
  1. Are marks awarded for a research proposal?
 
  1. Are marks lost if any format for the given for the  proposal are not adhered to?
 
  1. What (if any) is the penalty for poor grammar and spelling?
 
  1. How are inaccurate data penalised?
 
  1. What is the penalty for over/under length work?
 
  1. How is plagiarism penalised?
 
  1. Are there special requirements are there for the physical presentation of dissertations?
 
  1. Is the print style prescribed (e.g. Arial 10 point)?
 
  1. Are margin sizes defined?
 
  1. Is binding method prescribed?
 
  1. What rules are there for including video's/tapes/maps & other media as exhibits?
 
  1. What rules are there covering referencing?
 
  1. If, say, Harvard is required, is the exact detail specified in published examples?
 
  1. Did you know that Harvard referencing can take several forms?
 
  1. Do other rules take precedence?
    For example, some university-wide regulations may allow for a 10% over-run on word limit, although a course' regulations may not.
 
  1. Do dissertations normally contain recommendations?
 
  1. Do dissertations normally contain an acknowledgement to the supervisor?
